SEBRING, Fla. (March 15, 2007) — Jeff Altenburg, of Ellicott City, MD., will start from the pole for Round One of the 2007 SCCA SPEED Touring Car Championship at Sebring International Raceway. Altenburg will start alongside teammate Randy Pobst, of Gainesville, GA., making it an all-Mazda front row for the season opener, part of the 55th Annual Mobil 1 12 Hours of Sebring.

The January, 2007 issue of North American Pylon is in the mail. With snow stopping virtually all solo events on the eastern seaboard, producing event information has been difficult.

This month Pylon covers SCCA’s season-opening National Tour in Cecil, Georgia, and a San Francisco regional meet in Albany, California. Plus, we have features on: Bruce Cambern’s 427 Cobra restoration; announcing the Great American Solo Series; news that the Evolution School has three new owners; solving event sound problems; and Virgina Motor Sports Club’s annual banquet.

We also have a letter where reader Chris Obert points out “problems” with the natives.

It is with great personal and professional sadness that I am letting everyone know that Tasha Marlow will be leaving us at the end of the  year after twenty years of being a part of the SCCA family. She has decided to live full time in Wichita and to go back to school, which will allow her to pursue a new career.  

Often times, phrases like “pursue a new career” are code words that try to cover up someone leaving an organization for less than pleasant reasons. This is definitely NOT the case with Tasha as she has decided that it is time to begin the next phase of her life and is showing the courage to step out of the comfort zone she has here at the SCCA. Tasha began with us twenty years ago as a secretary that did not even know what the letters “SCCA” stood for and she leaves at the end of the year having just successfully managed, again, the relocation of the world’s largest participant motorsports event, the Tire Rack SCCA Solo National Championships. She has every reason to be proud of her time with us and the SCCA is a better organization as a result of her efforts.I will miss her attention to details that keeps me on track and her council that helps reign in my nuttier ideas, but I will mostly miss being able to use my stupid gag of referring to her as SCCA’s “oldest” employee.

TOPEKA, Kan. (Dec. 4, 2006) – Not a fan of runaway victories? Then this week’s SCCA Runoffs programming on SPEED is right up your alley. All four races are marked with tight battles for the lead, mechanical snafus and surprise endings.Runoffs programming kicks off Tuesday, Dec. 5 at 12:00 p.m. (EST) with F Production. 2004 F Production Champion and polesitter John Saurino, of Tulsa, Okla., takes the early lead and, thanks to a broken axel, an early exit. The result is an epic battle between 2002 F Production Champion Steve Sargis, of Frankfort, Ill., and hometown favorite Jesse Prather. Should you make the mistake of missing this race on Tuesday, you can catch it again Wednesday, Dec. 6 at 3:00 a.m.  Next up is American Sedan at 1:00 p.m. In this showdown of American muscle, Camaro versus Mustang versus Firebird, the question of the hour is whether or not John Heinricy, of Royal Oak, Mich., will take his fourth consecutive A Sedan title, and 10th-career SCCA National Championship. Starting 10th on the grid, it will certainly be an uphill battle for Heinricy, especially with dominating performances from Tom Sloe, of Newbury, Ohio, and Michael Lavigne, of Hooksett, N.H. The A Sedan race will also be rebroadcast on Dec. 6 at 4 a.m.

Now in the mail is the issue of North American Pylon covering the SCCA’s 2006 Solo Nationals. It’s the largest issue – 48 tabloid pages – we have ever produced. It carries a September 2006 cover date.
       
We have stories and pictures for all (but one) of the 72 classes. In addition we have a report on the 2006 Pro Solo finale won by Robert A.Seelig of Edmond, OK. Solo Events Board member Andy Hollis won the Pro Solo overall championship for 2006.

We have stories about the season-ending Rev-It-Up events sponsored by Chevrolet. Keith Marx set Fastest Time of the Day at the Virginia Motor Sports Claub’s Sept 10 meet in Richmond, VA. Mark Daddio set FTD at Sept. 10 Bristol, CT, meet in Connecticutt.
